Fabrics I Like and Scalloped Edge Samples

In aI decided to look for the fabrics. And the most fabrics I found is from our college fabrics cupboard. I looked for a neutral, silver, cream, white as a mother-of-pearl, and coral shade colours. The most of the fabrics I looked are quite thin.imageIn a few days time we were visiting the Fabric Corner shop wich we were looking for a fabrics. I got a couple of samples of satin fabric wich I think to work with on my final garment. The satin fabric are quite thin so I think it would be perfect for a ruffled skirt.

In addition to this blog I was experimenting with my chosen fabrics to make a samples of the scalloped edge, I wanted to see how the fabrics folds and practise to make the scalloped edge. So I made a three samples wich I think are successful.imageThe middle one scalloped edge in cream are my favourite because the fabric is perfect for this manipulation. And my decision are made in order to finalise my fabric chose. The cream satin is the Winner!

Gathers

As my inspiration is seashells I wanted to add gathers to my fabric manipulation task, because they reminds me of the seashell texture and surface.image I created a samples of the machine and hand-stitched gathering and explained the whole technique process. And attached a few photos of the Chanel collection wich I was inspired by. I used to practised this fabric manipulation before in my previous Architecture project and in my personal time. I believe my samples are quite effective and original.

Fabric Manipulations Scalloped Edge

I made a sample of scalloped edge using a cotton fabric.  I cut it out of the fabric using a template wich I made it myself.  It was my first go in making this manipulation , i was very exited.

The most important thing was to sew evenly around the curve and on reverse to cut a slit into the narrow gaps. Then turn out the right way and push the corners and edges out.imageAs it is my first go I’m very pleased with the outcome of it. I will try to practice more so I could get better result.

Textile Artist

I was doing research for a textile artist and I found very original and incredible Marit Fujivara. Her work is delicate and handmade. imageI collected some information about her work and education. And included a photos of her art.imageI really like the texture and details of her work, how she manipulates with fabric using different techniques  and materials.

I made a small sample using a various fabrics and colours to reflect her work. I tryed to lay and sew fabric in curvy line and I think it worked quite well.

Designer research

imageFor my designer research title page I created a mini samples of dresses to reflect a chosen collections. I’m very happy and pleased with the outcome of this page. To be honest I did designer research first, and this page after and it was very sudden idea of making it this title page.

imageValentino is my first of the chosen designers. Beautiful embellishments and flowing fabrics caught my eye then searching for designer. And I made a small samples of embellishments to accompany the research.

imageThe same Valentino but the different collection Fall/Winter 2013, playful and scalloped edge short dresses from the collection. I picked these dresses from huge collection because of the scalloped edges, round shaped edges reminded me of the seashell shape which is my inspiration.

imageChanel is my second designer for this task. I picked this collection for the same reason- ocean theme. I really like the freshness feeling, fresh, white, coral, mother of pearl and silver colours. The collection colour palette inspired me and determined my chose of colours for my final garment.imageAlong with the research I attached some trims, embellishments and small samples of fabric manipulation to reflect the theme and my inspiration.

imageThe third designer is Alexander McQueen and his ocean themed collection.  The inspiring details of the collection is layers of ruffles and frills and gathers. I attached  a small samples of ruffles and gathers to reflect a theme and at the same time to accompany my fabric manipulation task.

imageAnd the final piece of the task is Comparison of the designers. I explained why I chose these designers, what inspired me and listed the details of the collections. I’m pleased with the outcome of this task, especially with mini samples of it.

Update on circular ruffle

imageA couple weeks ago i made a circular ruffle out of the cotton fabric and I wasn’t happy about it , so I decided to have a go and make the other one from the different fabric but same cotton.

I went through the same instruction process, but the important thing was to sew the binding on the edge of the fabric . The actual sewing process wasn’t easy,I had to be careful to sew throug the double layered binding with the fabric in the middle, and to sew on the edge of the binding.

Its not the first time I was sewing binding on , I’ve have experienced this before.

I’m planing this experiment undergo in my Final Major Project.

And finally , I achieved my goal by changing this fabric manipulation.

Circular ruffle

I made a circular ruffle out of the cotton fabric for my fabric manipulation task. The important thing was to produce a successful  template. And then cut it out of the chosen fabric.

In my previous projects I was experimenting with different fabric manipulations, so this time I decided to make a ruffle as one of the assignments of the task. In future projects I will experiment with more fabric manipulations .

Then making this circular ruffle I followed the instructions. Unfortunately I made a mistake by not selecting a correct fabric. My selected fabric is cotton and it’s fraying.

I’m happy of the outcome of this experiment. I’m very pleased how I cut it out of the fabric and how all edges are even.

If I have more time I would improve this fabric manipulation. I would change the fabric into the wool , wich is not fraying or I would use the binding on the edge of the fabric.
